Links

Here is a selection of useful rhetorical studies resources. For your convenience (or perhaps your confusion), these links appear on all the web pages so that they can easily be accessed. This page will help you remember what the many abbreviations mean. For brevity's sake, I have only included resources that would be frequently useful rather than choosing the tempting option of including every possible page that has anything to do with the topic. But I have included additional links in the online syllabus for your convenience. Want to add your own links? Use HyperNews. Happy web-surfing!

Reference & Research Tools:

  • rhetorica ad digitum
This ambitious work in progress is an attempt to create an interactive online rhetoric textbook. The site offers an extensive outline of definitions of rhetoric and some important Classical and modern rhetorical scholars.

  • silva rhetoricæ
silva rhetoricæ (the forest of rhetoric) is an outstanding searchable collection of classical and renaissance rhetorical terms -- a Rhetoric in the classic sense -- for the information age.

  • rhetorical figures
A Handbook of Rhetorical Terms. Want to know if you're engaging in pleonasm? This is the place to ask!

  • rhetoric glossary
This was put together by students in 632 in Spring 1997. The list of terms is idiosyncratic, but nonetheless it is a fine resource.

  • comabstracts
Communication Abstracts from the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship. Unfortunately you can't actually view the abstracts without paying through the nose, but you can at least get citations here which can be useful.

  • classical search: When you really need the ancient wisdom, and only a fully configurable meta-search will do.

  • latin-english Dictionary:
You'd be surprised how often this will come in handy. Quick, what canon of rhetoric is the dispositio?

  • lexis
A frontend to lexis-nexis (for CSUN students) that makes it a lot easier to search for articles. If you do any research on current events this is an excellent resource.

  • nofuncharlie search
A bunch of search engines collected in one place. Easy to use if you know what the search engines are for. Try a few searches just to get familiar with what is available. The link takes you to the academic search engines; there are also search engines available for the web, news, and more.

  • lookitup
Another incredible meta-search tool. A ton of search engines with an academic bent. Not as easy to use as nofuncharlie though.

  • reference desk
A humungous reference library with links to just about everything else.

  • encarta
An online encyclopedia owned by Microsoft.

  • wwwebster's dictionary:
An online version of the famous Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Scholarly Resources:

  • library
CSUN Library Research Tools. Some excellent full-text databases and other research tools are right here at your fingertips. Your tuition pays for these resources so you might as well use them. Be sure to check the Library's excellent Research Strategies page which includes lots of general tips about researching and writing, as well as suggesting a basic structure for research papers as well as complete information about source citation. Students who are concerned that they may not know how to write a research paper should definitely consult these resources.

  • eserver
The English Server from Carnegie Mellon University is a wonderful resource; over 27,000 texts online and fully available to students. Online journals and scholarly essays on any number of topics. The link takes you to its excellent rhetoric section; you can also browse the entire contents of eserver. Fully searchable, so get down!

  • rhetlinks
These links from the University of Iowa's Communication Studies Department include both links to rhetoric resources all over the web and links to essays and useful documents stored locally.

  • culturalstudies.net
Cultural Studies Central: A promising cultural studies site with links to lots of information.

  • popcultures.com
    Another Cultural Studies Information clearinghouse.

  • perseus
Your online guide to ancient scholarship and classical resources. This excellent resource has full texts of much of the classical literature that you will read about, both in English and in Greek (and Latin). Bring your Greek fonts!
